Khaṇḍagiri, Udayagiri (English spelling)

Japanese: カンダギリ･ウダヤギリ（英語表記）Khaṇḍagiri,Udayagiri

Jain ruins on two adjacent hills, Khandagiri (southwest, 15 caves and a stone temple reconstructed in the early 19th century) and Udayagiri (northeast, 18 caves and the remains of a stone temple with a circular rear on the summit), about 6 km southwest of Bhubaneswar in the state of Orissa in eastern India. The inscription of King Kalavela in Cave 14 of Udayagiri is thought to date to the end of the 1st century BCE, and the main caves were excavated by the 2nd century. The reliefs on the upper part of the front corridors of caves 1, 3, 9 and 10 of Udayagiri and cave 3 of Khandagiri feature soft, dynamic depictions of the human body.

東インド，オリッサ州ブバネーシュワルの南西約6kmの相接する二つの丘カンダギリ(南西，15の石窟と19世紀初期再建の石積寺院)とウダヤギリ(北東，18の石窟と頂上に後円の石積寺院址)にあるジャイナ教遺跡。ウダヤギリ第14窟にあるカーラベーラ王の刻文は前1世紀末期と考えるのが有力で，おもな石窟はそれから2世紀ころまでに掘られた。ウダヤギリ第1･3･9･10窟，カンダギリ第3窟などの正面廊壁面上部の浮彫は，柔らかで動きのある人体表現を特色としている。
