When elements with similar chemical properties coexist, a phenomenon in which when one substance is attempted to precipitate or separate, other substances that would not precipitate on their own precipitate along with the former. For example, when a potassium sulfate solution is added to a barium chloride solution, a large amount of potassium sulfate co-precipitates along with the barium sulfate. This can cause impurities to be mixed into the precipitate or crystals, but on the other hand, this can be used to positively separate and concentrate trace elements (coprecipitation method). The substance added as a precipitate for coprecipitation is called a carrier. → Related topics Precipitation Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
