Coprecipitation - Kyochin

Japanese: 共沈 - きょうちん

When elements with similar chemical properties coexist, a phenomenon in which when one substance is attempted to precipitate or separate, other substances that would not precipitate on their own precipitate along with the former. For example, when a potassium sulfate solution is added to a barium chloride solution, a large amount of potassium sulfate co-precipitates along with the barium sulfate. This can cause impurities to be mixed into the precipitate or crystals, but on the other hand, this can be used to positively separate and concentrate trace elements (coprecipitation method). The substance added as a precipitate for coprecipitation is called a carrier.

化学的性質の似た元素が共存している場合，そのうちのある種の物質を沈殿・分離させようとすると，単独では沈殿しないはずの他の物質が前者に伴って沈殿する現象。たとえば塩化バリウム溶液に硫酸カリウム溶液を加えると，硫酸バリウムの沈殿とともに多量の硫酸カリウムが共沈する。沈殿や結晶に不純物が混じる原因にもなるが，逆にこれを積極的に利用して微量元素の分離，濃縮などに用いられる（共沈法）。共沈用の沈殿物として添加される物質を担体という。
