Oobuka - Oobuka

...It was named after the Sando-gasa, used by couriers during the Edo period. It is said that Sando-gasa was first used during the Jōkyō era (1684-88), and those used around the Kan'en and Horeki eras (1748-64) were large, shallow sedge hats similar to onna-gasa, but those used around the Tenpō and Kaei eras (1830-54) were very deep sedge hats similar to manju-gasa, and were also called ōbuka. It is said that the reason for the deep sedge hats was to prevent injury to the face if a person fell off a horse, and also to protect against wind and dust.

…江戸時代に三度飛脚が用いたのでこの名がある。はじめて三度笠が用いられたのは貞享年間(1684‐88)といわれ，寛延･宝暦(1748‐64)ころのものは女笠に似て大型の浅い菅笠であったが，天保･嘉永(1830‐54)ころに用いられたものは饅頭笠（まんじゆうがさ）に似てかぶる度のきわめて深い菅笠で，一名，大深（おおぶか）とも呼ばれた。そのかぶる度を深くするのは，誤って落馬したときに顔面にきずを受けない用心とも，また風やほこりを防ぐ必要からともいわれている。…
