It is said that Sando-gasa was first used during the Jōkyō era (1684-88), and those used around the Kan'en and Horeki eras (1748-64) were large, shallow sedge hats similar to onna-gasa, but those used around the Tenpō and Kaei eras (1830-54) were very deep sedge hats similar to manju-gasa, and were also called ōbuka.
