In Nagasaki, it was called "hyomots". Marine products exported from Nagasaki during the Edo period. They were so named because they were exported in straw bales. Initially, there were only two products, "irinako" (dried sea cucumber) and "dried abalone", but later "shark fin" was added. Since the end of the 17th century, Nagasaki's main export product was copper, but from the mid-18th century, copper became scarce and trade with China was replaced by straw bales of various goods (shoshiki). The shogunate appointed contractors in various regions and set up a straw bales exchange in Nagasaki to let Nagasaki townspeople handle the trade, but in 1785 (Tenmei 5), it abolished the straw bales contract office and set up the straw bales of goods motoyakusho (official office for purchasing straw bales), dispatching officials to various provinces to purchase directly.
