Li Zong-ren (English spelling)
[Live] Guangxu 16 (1890).9.16. Guangxi, Guilin
Died January 30, 1969. A Chinese soldier in Beijing. One of the leaders of the Guangxi warlords. Graduated from the Guangxi Military Academy, he joined the Kuomintang as a brigade commander under the command of the Guangxi warlord Lu Rongting, and participated in the Northern Expedition as commander of the 3rd Route Army and commander of the 7th Army of the National Revolutionary Army. In 1927, he was appointed to the Kuomintang Central Executive Committee, and also served as a member of the National Government and the Military Committee. When the Nanjing and Wuhan governments were at odds, he mediated between them, drove Chiang Kai-shek to resign, and took his place as commander in chief of the National Revolutionary Army. After Chiang's return in 1928, he was appointed commander in chief of the 4th Group Army when the Northern Expedition resumed. From 1929 to 1930, he was in conflict with Chiang Kai-shek, and fought an anti-Chiang war with Bai Chongxi in Guangxi, but failed. In 1936, the anti-Chiang resistance movement in both Guangxi and Nanjing also failed. He served in the War of Resistance Against Japan as commander-in-chief of the 5th War Region and Chairman of Anhui Province, and won victory at Taierzhuang. In 1945, he became head of the North Parallel Camp of the Military Commission and commander-in-chief of the North China War Region. In 1948, he was appointed vice president of the Kuomintang. In January 1949, after Chiang Kai-shek announced his retirement, he was appointed acting president. After failing in the Kuomintang-Communist peace negotiations, he fled to the United States via Hong Kong. In July 1965, he returned to Beijing. The following year, he participated in the ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He died of illness in 1969.
