Kamesuke Nagakawa

Japanese: 奈河亀輔 - ながわかめすけ

A Kabuki playwright. Also known as Kamesuke. There are three generations of him, but the first is the most famous.

Dates of birth and death unknown. He is the ancestor of the surname Nagawa, a family name for Osaka Kabuki playwrights, and is said to have adopted the name Nagawa after being born in Nara and wandering around Kawachi. He was active in Osaka during the An'ei period (1772-81) along with the first Namiki Gohei. In Osaka, where the influence of Marumoto was strong, he wrote one masterpiece after another of pure Kabuki through lectures and other means. During the Tenmei period (1781-89), he became known as the "general manager" and was in charge of all performances. His representative works include "Matsushita Kaheiji Renga no Hyoban," "The Tale of the Race for Ise," "Igagoe Norikake Gappa," "Kara Sendai Hagi," "The Kagamiyama Kuruwa Manuscript," and "The Great Gan Jyoju Tenga Chaya Mura." His disciple was Naka Shimesuke, whose younger brother Naka Tokusuke briefly called himself the second generation. The third generation was a writer around the Kaei era (1848-1854).

初世

生没年不詳。大坂の歌舞伎作者の姓、奈河の祖で、奈良に生まれ河内(かわち)を放浪したために奈河を名のったと伝えられる。安永(あんえい)期（1772～81）の大坂で初世並木五瓶(ごへい)とともに活躍。丸本の影響が強かった大坂において、講釈などによった純歌舞伎の名作を次々と書く。天明(てんめい)期（1781～89）には「総支配人」と称し興行全般を管理するようになった。代表作は『松下嘉平治連歌評判(まつしたかへいじれんがのひょうばん)』『競伊勢物語(はでくらべいせものがたり)』『伊賀越乗掛合羽(いがごえのりかけがっぱ)』『伽羅先代萩(めいぼくせんだいはぎ)』『加々見山廓写本(さとのききがき)』『大願成就殿下茶屋聚(たいがんじょうじゅてんがちゃやむら)』など。門下に奈河七五三助(しめすけ)がおり、その門弟奈河篤助(とくすけ)が一時2世を名のる。3世は嘉永(かえい)（1848～54）ごろの作者。
