The Righteous Corps

Japanese: 義烈団 - ぎれつだん
The Righteous Corps
Kim Won Bong and others who were dissatisfied with the non-violent course of the March 1st Independence Movement organized this group in 1919 with the aim of raising the spirit of Korean independence. It was founded on November 10 of that year in Jilin Province, Manchuria, and initially had 13 members. It is said that the group's name was chosen from the Japanese meaning of "righteousness" and the Japanese meaning of "ferociousness." It advocated "the doctrine of firing bullets into the heart of Japanese imperialism," and targeted the Government-General's officials, Japanese military leaders, and pro-Japanese elements for assassination, as well as the Government-General's offices, the Oriental Takushoku Company, the Mainichi Shinpo newspaper, the police, and other institutions of colonial rule. It advocated "expelling the Wa slaves, restoring the motherland, breaking down classes, and equal land rights," and had a strong left-wing nationalist tendency.
