Mount Shosha

Japanese: 書写山 - しょしゃざん
Mount Shosha

A mountain located in the south of Hyogo Prefecture, northwest of Himeji City. It is 371 meters above sea level. It is part of Seiban Hill Prefectural Natural Park, and is served by a city-run ropeway. The entire mountain is made up of quartz trachyte, and the vegetation is a rich variety of warm-tropical primeval forest. At the summit of the flat, elevated semi-plain lies Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple, a famous Tendai sect temple known as the "Hieizan of the West." There are many buildings and Buddhist statues that are designated as important cultural properties by the government, and the grounds are a nationally designated historic site.
