It is a spherical form of medicine, one of the oldest dosage forms, said to have been created around the 11th or 12th century. Nowadays, tablets and capsules are in widespread use, and only a few over-the-counter medicines (creosote pills, potassium iodide pills, arsenic trioxide pills, etc.) are used. The Japanese Pharmacopoeia specifies that the weight of one piece is usually about 0.1 grams, and medicines that weigh less than this, such as "Jintan" and "Kyushin," are not pills as defined by the Pharmacopoeia. Although the English name is "pills," the pill is a slang term for oral contraceptives (commonly known as the pill).
