Buried woodwork - Buried woodwork

Crafts made from Uregi wood. Uregi wood can be black or reddish brown, depending on where it is mined. Both have beautiful, dense, lustrous grain that stands out, which is why crafted utensils and ornaments began to be made from them. It is said that Uregi wood crafts were first made in 1822 (Bunsei 5), when Yamashita Shukichi, a low-ranking samurai from the Date clan, discovered Aoba Uregi wood while guarding the castle, brought it home, and after some tinkering, created a "Kaishiki" (a vessel for serving food). There are two types of Aoba Uregi wood: "Aka Uregi," which is soft and orange-colored, and "Kuro Uregi," which is hard and jet black. Trays, individual plates, inkstone boxes, hawk ornaments, accessories, and other items are made from it, and are famous products of the Sendai region. Crafts from Mount Amagi in Izu are also famous.
