benzyldimethyl(tetradecyl)ammonium chloride. C ₂₃ H ₄₂ ClN(368.05). [C ₆ H ₅ CH ₂ N(CH ₃ ) ₂ C ₁₄ H ₂₉ ]Cl. Produced by methylating tetradecylamine to produce dimethyltetradecylamine, which is then reacted with benzyl chloride. White to off-white powder or colorless to pale yellow gelatinous pieces, jelly-like fluid or mass. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and benzene, insoluble in ether. Stable for long periods at room temperature. One of the cationic surfactants. Quaternary ammonium bactericide. Exhibits antibacterial activity against non-spore-forming bacteria and molds. Used as a bactericide, disinfectant, preservative, and wound cleaner. Also has a wide range of applications as an analytical reagent, such as a sensitivity enhancer in the colorimetric analysis of trace metal ions and a positively charged colloid in colloid titration.
