A jurist who represents the establishment of German common law (modern usage of the term Pandegten). He was from a prominent family of jurists and theologians in Saxony. He received his doctorate from the University of Wittenberg in 1619, and from the following year served as a member of the Leipzig Court of Justice for almost his entire life. He also became a professor at the University of Leipzig (1645-53) and held various other important positions. Carpuzzo's academic achievements were all based on his own experience in legal practice in his own country. In his masterpiece, De pratique sanguinis der Neue Saxony (1635), he went beyond borrowed Italian jurisprudence to summarize and describe the criminal law currently in force in Germany under the Carolina Criminal Code, which dominated German criminal justice until the mid-18th century.

ドイツ普通法学の確立期(〈パンデクテンの現代的慣用〉)を代表する法律家。ザクセンの有力な法律家･神学者家系の出。1619年ウィッテンベルク大学で学位を取得，翌年からほぼ生涯を通じてライプチヒ審判人裁判所の構成員をつとめ，これと並んでライプチヒ大学教授(1645‐53)となり，他の種々の要職にもついた。カルプツォの学問的業績はすべて自国の法実務の経験を基礎としている点に特徴がある。代表作《ザクセン新帝国刑事訴訟実務》(1635)では，借物のイタリア法学を乗り越え，カロリーナ刑事法典下のドイツ現行の刑事法を集約して叙述し，18世紀中葉すぎまでドイツ刑事司法を支配した。
