…The cerebral cortex is considered to play the most important role in the central nervous system, but there is not much knowledge about its structure and function. The cerebral cortex consists of parts that have been present since lower vertebrates and parts that only appear in higher vertebrates. The former is called the phylogenetically old cortex and the latter the new cortex (neocortex). In terms of ontogeny, there are parts that form early in development and parts that form later in development, and the former and latter roughly correspond to the old cortex and the new cortex. …
