A scholar of Oriental history, he made outstanding achievements in the study of Northeast Asia (the so-called Manchuria and Korea) and ancient Japanese history. He graduated from the Department of History, College of Literature, Tokyo Imperial University in 1904 (Meiji 37), and became an assistant professor in 1916 (Taisho 5), where he was in charge of the first Korean history course. He became a professor in 1922 (Taisho 11), and wrote many papers and worked to train talented successors. In 1937, he was nominated as a member of the Imperial Academy. He also made a significant contribution to ancient history research at the request of the Research Department of the South Manchuria Railway Company. His major works include "Manchuria and Korea History Research" (6 volumes), "The Bunroku-Keicho Invasion" (2 volumes) and "New Research on the Mongol Invasions" (2 volumes), and "A Study of Ancient Japanese History."
