A general term for the study of the deformation and fracture of rocks and bedrock. It is also called rock mechanics, rock mechanics, or rock mechanics. In the sense that it focuses on specific natural products, it is a study that belongs to the same category as soil mechanics. Research on the deformation and fracture of rocks and bedrock has traditionally been conducted in closely related specialized fields such as geology, seismology, mining science, and civil engineering, each of which was conducted on a case-by-case basis according to the purpose. Efforts to integrate these fields into a single academic field began in the late 1950s, and the International Society for Rock Mechanics was founded in 1966.
