A rotifer of the family Brachionidae in the class Rotifera. It is widely distributed in temperate ponds and marshes and lives in plankton. It is oval in shape, somewhat soft, and measures 180-570 μm in length. The surface is smooth or lightly punctuated. There are four spines in a row on the anterior edge of the dorsal surface, of which the two in the middle are longer than those on either side. The anterior edge of the ventral surface is uneven and has a V-shaped notch. The legs protruding from the posterior end of the body have small claws at the tips. There is a wide variation in body size and shape. The closely related species B. plicatilis (illustration) consists of two subspecies and has six spines on the anterior dorsal edge of the carapace. 真輪虫綱ツボワムシ科の輪形動物。温帯域の池沼に広く分布し,プランクトン生活をする。被甲長180~570μmの卵円形で,やや軟らかい。表面は平滑かあるいは軽い点刻がある。背面の前縁には4個のとげが並んでいて,そのうち中央の2個が両側方のものよりも長い。腹面前縁には凹凸があってV字状の切れ込みがある。体の後端から突出する肢の先端に小さいつめをもっている。体の大きさや形態には非常に幅広い変異が見られる。近縁種のシオミズツボワムシB.plicatilis(イラスト)は2亜種よりなり,被甲の背面前縁に6本のとげがある。
