Tanagura Tectonic Line

Japanese: 棚倉構造線 - たなくらこうぞうせん

Also known as the Tanagura Fault or Tanagura Shear Zone. A large strike-slip fault that stretches 60 km from north-northwest to south-southeast from Tanagura Town, Fukushima Prefecture to Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its northern extension is estimated to run through Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture into the Sea of Japan, and its southern extension is estimated to continue from Kashima Nada to offshore Choshi. This tectonic line marks the boundary between the belt-like structure of Southwest Japan, and the geological distribution and rock characteristics before the Mesozoic era are significantly different between the east and west, so this tectonic line is considered to be the geological boundary between Southwest Japan and Northeast Japan.

棚倉破砕帯，棚倉断層とも。福島県棚倉町から茨城県常陸太田市にかけて北北西〜南南東へ約60kmのびる大規模な横ずれ断層。北方延長は山形県酒田市から日本海へぬけ，南方延長は鹿島灘から銚子沖へ続くと推定されている。この構造線を境に西南日本の帯状構造がとぎれ，東西で中生代以前の地質分布や岩石の特徴が大きく異なることから，この構造線が地質学的には西南日本と東北日本の境界と考えられる。
