The capital of Bihar state in eastern India. Located on the right bank of the Ganga River, it is a commercial center and a center for the distribution of rice. It is an ancient city named after Pataliputra, the capital of the Magadha Kingdom (6th century BC), and has many ruins. It has a university (established in 1917) and a library known for its collection of Islamic documents.
