1914‐2003 British historian. Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford University (1957-80). In 1979 he was created Baron Daker of Granton, and the following year he retired from Oxford to become Dean of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Apart from his debut work, Archbishop Lord (1940), his books are mostly collections of critiques, and lack profound historical research, but he is known as a rare polemicist, and was active in debates on the gentry and the 17th century crisis. His works translated into Japanese include The Last Days of Hitler (1947) and The Reformation and Social Change (1967). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
