It is the language that constitutes the oldest layer of the Indo-European language family, the Indic language. It is close to Avestan, the oldest layer of the Iranian language family. It was brought to India by the Aryans who invaded and settled there at the end of the Indus civilization. It has a huge amount of literature on mythology, rituals, and philosophy, from the Rigveda around 1200 BC to the Upanishads around 200 BC. It is a typical inflected language with complex case changes and verb declensions, and the grammarian Panini, who lived in the 5th to 4th century BC, compiled and standardized the grammar, establishing Sanskrit. ◇Vedic in English.
