A full-length novel by the British author Thackeray. It was published in monthly installments between 1847 and 1848. Vanity Fair is the name of a place in Bunyan's famous allegorical story, Pilgrim's Progress, where people loudly sell their vanity, but Thackeray chose this apt title to satirize and expose the vanity-filled snobbism of 19th century upper class society. As the subtitle suggests, "A Story Without a Hero," there is no particularly outstanding protagonist, but the story centers on the life paths of two characters, Becky Sharp, a cool-headed woman who skillfully navigates the world and uses the men who flock to her to rise to upper class society, and Amelia Sedley, a quiet and good-natured woman, and features a variety of other characters, making it a truly grand panorama of 19th century Britain.
