Phajus flavus (Bl.) Lindl.
A terrestrial orchid (illustration) that grows on the forest floor of evergreen forests in the subtropical zone of Japan. It is an orchidaceae plant that is striking for its large yellow flowers and yellowish-brown edges on the lip. The pseudobulb is ellipsoidal, 4-8 cm long, and its upper stem is wrapped in a leaf sheath and inconspicuous. It has 3-5 leaves, an oblong leaf blade 20-40 cm long, 5-8 cm wide, and wrinkled vertically, and the leaf sheath is 20-30 cm long. The flower stalk grows laterally from the base of the pseudobulb, is 40-60 cm tall, and bears 10-20 flowers from April to July. The flowers are yellow, about 5 cm in diameter, and open or half-open.
