Kanze Black Snow

A Noh actor from the Edo period. The 9th Kanze Daifu. The eldest son of the 8th Gensho. Childhood name Oniwaka. First name Yosaburo Teruji. Later Yosaburo Tadachika. Retired name Shinai. His father died at the age of 12, and he was mentored by his grandfather in religious studies until he was 18. He was highly favored by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and moved from Sunpu to Kyoto, where he worked as a Daifu in the Tokugawa household. Later, in May 1610 (Keicho 15), he fled Sunpu and retreated to Mount Koya, calling himself Hattori Iansai Bokan, but returned two years later and took the name Kanze Sakon Daifu Bokan. Publication of the so-called "Genwa Uzukibon," a Kanze school song book with all 100 numbers, began in 1620 (Genwa 6), and as Daifu, he personally proofread and supervised the work.

江戸時代の能役者。9世観世大夫。8世元尚の嫡子。童名鬼若。初名与三郎照氏。のち与三郎忠親。隠居名身愛。12歳で父に死別し,18歳まで祖父の宗節の薫陶を受ける。徳川家康に厚く用いられ,駿府から京に進出して徳川家お抱えの大夫として活躍。のち慶長15(1610)年5月に駿府を出奔して高野山に籠もり,服部慰安斎暮閑を名乗ったがその2年後には帰参して観世左近大夫暮閑と称する。観世流謡本で全100番のいわゆる『元和卯月本』の刊行が元和6(1620)年に着手されており,彼は大夫として自らその校閲,監修に当たった。
