Gobaishi

Gobaishi
Also called fushi. It is the dried galls that develop from bites by the sumac aphid on the leaves of plants of the Anacardiaceae family, such as sumac. It is an irregularly branched, gray-yellow to yellow-brown, sac-like substance about 8 cm long and 6 cm in diameter. The internal cavity may contain dead insects or wax. The main component is tannic acid, which is used as a raw material for the manufacture of tannic acid medicines, inks, and dyes.

付子(ふし)とも。ウルシ科植物のヌルデ等の葉にヌルデシロアブラムシが与えた刺傷より生じた虫こぶを乾燥したもの。長さ8cm,径6cmほどの不整に分岐した灰黄〜黄褐色の袋状物質。内部の空洞に死虫や虫蝋を包有することがある。主成分はタンニン酸で,医薬品のタンニン酸やインキ,染料の製造原料として用いる。
