...A mushroom of the Basidiomycete family (illustration). The densely packed bristly needles on the underside of the cap resemble the fur of a wild animal, so it was named Kawatake (skin mushroom), which was corrupted to Kotake. Kotake is the name given to shiitake mushrooms and does not refer to this species.
