Melting point 173-175 °C (slightly decomposed). Density 2.098 g cm -3 . Slightly soluble in water and ether, easily soluble in acetic acid and acetone. Strongly irritating to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Used as a brominating agent and oxidizing agent in a wide range of applications, including bromination at allylic and benzylic positions, oxidation of α-hydroxy acids and α-amino acids with decarboxylation to produce the corresponding aldehydes or ketones, and conversion of acetals to esters.
