...When solid particles are stationary and a fluid is allowed to flow through the voids between the solids and the fluid, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reactions, etc. are performed by contacting the solids and the fluid, the particle bed is called a fixed bed or a packed bed. When the particles in the packed bed are continuously removed from the bottom and new particles are added from the top, causing the particles in the bed to gradually fall due to gravity, and the solids and the fluid are continuously contacted, it is called a moving bed.
