Fehling, H. von

...A reagent used to detect and quantify aldehydes and reducing sugars. It was created in 1848 by German chemist Hermann von Fehling (1812-85) and is a strongly alkaline blue solution mainly composed of a tartrate complex of copper(II) ions. If left for a long time, it will decompose and produce reducing substances, so the following two solutions, A and B, are prepared separately in advance and equal amounts of both solutions are mixed just before use.
