Gravette culture

A culture that flourished during the Late Paleolithic, mainly in the Loess region of Europe. They used stone blades as raw materials to make stone tools such as points, knife-shaped stone tools, carvers, and scrapers, and also used bone and horn tools. Most of the female figurines known as Paleolithic Venuses are associated with this culture. It appeared at roughly the same time as the Aurignacian culture, and in France and other places both cultures can be found in the same region. In France it is often called the Upper Périgord culture. The Gravett culture diversified in each region in response to the local environment during the latter part of the Late Paleolithic, becoming rich in local color.

後期旧石器時代にヨーロッパの黄土地帯を中心にして栄えた文化。石刃を原材として使用し，尖頭器，ナイフ形石器，刻器，削器などの石器をつくり，骨角器も使用している。いわゆる旧石器時代のビーナスと呼ばれる婦人像の大半はこの文化に伴う。オーリニャック文化とほぼ同時期に現れ，フランスなどでは，同一地域に両文化がみられるところもある。フランスでは上部ペリゴール文化と呼ばれることが多い。グラベット文化は後期旧石器時代後葉には，それぞれの地域でその環境に応じて多様化し，地方色豊かなものになっている。
