1282‐1348 A Spanish prose writer. He was the nephew of Alfonso X the Wise, the greatest patron of the arts and learning in medieval Spain, and a courtier skilled in both the literary and military arts. He gained immortality for his masterpiece, Conde Lucanor (1335). This work is a collection of 51 stories in which the young Count Lucanor asks his tutor, Patronio, for advice on all things life, and Patronio gives him moral admonitions interspersed with various fables. Together with Boccaccio's Decameron, written 13 years later, this work provided much material for later European literature. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
