A Spanish prose writer. He was the nephew of Alfonso X the Wise, the greatest patron of the arts and learning in medieval Spain, and a courtier skilled in both the literary and military arts. He gained immortality for his masterpiece, Conde Lucanor (1335). This work is a collection of 51 stories in which the young Count Lucanor asks his tutor, Patronio, for advice on all things life, and Patronio gives him moral admonitions interspersed with various fables. Together with Boccaccio's Decameron, written 13 years later, this work provided much material for later European literature.

スペインの散文作家。スペイン中世最大の学芸の庇護者である賢王アルフォンソ10世の甥で，文武両道をよくする宮廷人であったが，代表作《ルカノール伯爵Conde Lucanor》(1335)によって不朽の名声を得ている。この作品は若いルカノール伯爵が養育係のパトロニオに人生万般について教えを乞い，パトロニオがさまざまな寓話をまじえながら道徳的訓戒を与えるという形式をとった51話からなる説話集であり，その13年後に書かれたボッカッチョの《デカメロン》とともに後のヨーロッパ文学に多くの素材を提供した。
