Sannomiya

Japanese: 三宮 - さんのみや
Sannomiya

A shopping street located to the south of JR Sannomiya Station in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The name comes from Sannomiya Shrine along the Saigoku Kaido road. JR Sannomiya Station was established in 1931, and the area developed rapidly with the Hanshin Electric Railway's underground access and the Hankyu Electric Railway's elevated access. The city hall, International Conference Center, Kobe Shimbun Kaikan, and Sogo Department Store are located here, and redevelopment began in the 1960s with the Sannomiya Urban Redevelopment Project, with the construction of an underground mall (Sanchika Town) and downtown buildings (San Plaza, Center Plaza, and the West Building), and the multi-level layout of retail stores, offices, and entertainment facilities, making the area Kobe's number one shopping district. Sannomiya Station was opened on the Kobe New Transit (Port Liner) line heading to Port Island (an artificial island) in 1980 (Showa 55), followed by Sannomiya Station on the city subway Seishin-Yamate Line in 1987, and Sannomiya-Hanadokei Station on the same coastal line in 2001 (Heisei 13). In the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995 (Heisei 7), many buildings, including the station building, were destroyed.
