Separate - Separate

Japanese: 別 - わけ
Separate - Separate
〘Noun〙 One of the surnames used before the Ritsuryo system. A surname of a clan separated from the Emperor. It is often used as a surname of a family that ruled a region, and it is said that it was originally of imperial descent and was first used as the name of a place by local officials who came down to the region as local officials. *From the Kojiki (712): "From then on, the other 77 kings were all given the titles of kuni no miyatsuko, also wake, and Inanoki and kuni no toshi in each province." [Additional notes] (1) The ke in this "wake" is classified as type B in the special kana spelling of the ancient period, and is considered to be a noun in the conjunctive form of the lower two-step verb "waku (bun)."
(2) The inscription on the iron sword excavated from the Inariyama Tomb in Saitama, which is believed to date back to 471, includes the inscription " Owake," and in the Kojiki, it is written as "Wake" or "Wake, " as in "Amenoihatowake no Kami" (top) and " Izahowake no Mikoto " (bottom). This means someone of noble blood, and it was probably given to members of the imperial family who were given fiefs in local areas.
