Classical music of South India. With the emergence of Islamic courts in the north in the 12th century, Indian classical music split into two branches: north (Hindustani music, with strong emotional and Islamic elements) and south (Karnataka music, with strong traditional Indian theoretical and Hindu elements). In the 15th and 16th centuries, religious songs were composed in various languages, and in the 16th to 18th centuries, music theory developed in particular. The 18th century was the golden age of Karnataka music, and vocal forms such as kriti and kirtanam were developed, and these works remain major repertoires today. Current major musical forms include varnam, ragam tanam, and pallavi. It is also used as accompaniment for the classical dance Bharata Natyam.

南インドの古典音楽。12世紀に北部にイスラーム宮廷が出現したことにより，インドの古典音楽は北（ヒンドゥスターニー音楽。情緒的・イスラーム的要素が強い）と南（カルナータカ音楽。インド古来の理論的・ヒンドゥー的要素が強い）の２系列に分かれた。15―16世紀には各地の言葉による宗教歌が相次いで作られ，16―18世紀には，音楽理論が特に発展した。18世紀はカルナータカ音楽の黄金時代で，声楽形式のクリティやキールタナムが発達し，その作品は今日でも主要なレパートリーとなっている。現在の主な音楽形式には，バルナム，ラーガム・ターナム・パッラビなどがある。古典舞踊バラタ・ナーティヤムの伴奏にも使われる。
