Classical music of South India. With the emergence of Islamic courts in the north in the 12th century, Indian classical music split into two branches: north (Hindustani music, with strong emotional and Islamic elements) and south (Karnataka music, with strong traditional Indian theoretical and Hindu elements). In the 15th and 16th centuries, religious songs were composed in various languages, and in the 16th to 18th centuries, music theory developed in particular. The 18th century was the golden age of Karnataka music, and vocal forms such as kriti and kirtanam were developed, and these works remain major repertoires today. Current major musical forms include varnam, ragam tanam, and pallavi. It is also used as accompaniment for the classical dance Bharata Natyam. → Related topics: Aalāp, Bīna, and Mridangam Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
