Jooss - Kurt Jooss

German dancer and choreographer. Born in Wasseralfingen. Studied dance under R. Laban, and in 1924 founded the New Dance Theatre (Neue Tanzbeunen) with S. Leder, performing works such as "Die Dichterbach". In 1929, he became dance director of the "Folkwankschule" in Essen. He created works such as "Die Stadt" and "Dance in Old Vienna", and in 1932 entered and won the creation competition of the International Dance Library in Paris with "The Green Table". This ballet satirizes international politics and military actions, and is famous as a masterpiece of anti-war dance. He fled to England with the rise of the Nazis, but returned to Essen in 1949 and devoted himself to dance education as well as creative activities. Pina Bausch (1940-2009) and Reinhild Hoffmann (1943- ) were among his students.
