The name of a puppet theater. As a rival to the Bunraku Theater, the Sawa-no-seki Theater opened in June 1883 at the north end of Nipponbashi, Osaka (Chuo Ward, Osaka City). As its reputation grew with each performance, Terai Yasushiro (1853-1917, later Toyotake Yanagi Tekidayu II) became the sponsor and in January 1884, the Hikoroku Theater opened at the north gate of the grounds of Bakuromachi Inari Shrine (Namba Shrine in Awajicho, Chuo Ward, Osaka City), where the Sawa-no-seki troupe was moved for performances. The following month, it was renamed the Hikoroku Theater. Thanks to its convenient location, performance results began to improve, so in September the Bunraku Theater also moved from Matsushima to the grounds of Goryo Shrine, close to the Hikoroku Theater.
