…One of the Seven Entrances of Kyoto, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. It is an exit from Kyoto City to the Tokaido and Tosando roads, and refers to the area from Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge to the foot of Kujoyama, and is also known as the Sanjo Entrance or the Otsu Entrance. In the Wamyō Ruijūshō, it is written as “Kamiawata-go and Shimoawata-go in Atago County, Yamashiro Province,” and it was called the Awata Entrance because it passed through Awata-go. …
