… His films, Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948), adapted from Dickens' novels, marked the start of a renaissance in postwar British cinema. After Hobson's Choice (1954), which could be said to combine Dickens' novels with Noel Coward's petty bourgeois comedy, and the classic romance film The Journey (1955), which was an extension of The Love Story, he went on to win Academy Awards for Best Director for The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962), both produced by Hollywood producer Sam Spiegel, and established himself as a major international director. From "Lawrence of Arabia" to "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) and "Ryan's Daughter" (1970), he became a master of literary melodramas that made full use of the large 70mm screen and achieved 100% box office value, with "Ryan's Daughter" being said to be the last "true 70mm film" shot with a 70mm camera.

…British explorer, archaeologist, and soldier. Known colloquially as Lawrence of Arabia. He studied archaeology at Oxford University, and was particularly interested in the Middle East. He participated in the British Museum's excavations of Middle Eastern ruins from 1910 to 1914.
