Also known as purulent eye discharge. Acute gonococcal conjunctivitis. Neonatal conjunctivitis is generally contracted through the birth canal during childbirth. The incubation period is 1-3 days, during which the conjunctiva becomes red and swollen, and a large amount of serous and then purulent secretions are produced. If the cornea is affected, ulcers may develop, leading to perforation and blindness. Treatment involves the administration of antibiotics such as penicillin. For newborns, prevention is achieved by administering Crede eye drops (1-2% silver nitrate solution).

膿漏眼とも。淋(りん)菌性急性結膜炎。一般に出産の際，産道などから感染する新生児結膜炎で，潜伏期１〜３日で，結膜は赤くはれ，初め漿液(しょうえき)性やがて膿性の分泌物が多量に出る。角膜が冒されると，潰瘍(かいよう)を生じ，穿孔(せんこう)を起こし，失明することがある。治療はペニシリンなど抗生物質の投与。新生児に対しては，クレーデ点眼（１〜２％硝酸銀液の点眼）で予防する。
