German novelist. Born and raised in Colmar in the Alsace region as the illegitimate son of an influential man, he gradually established himself in Colmar by establishing the Meistersang artisan song movement and writing passion plays. In 1555, he became a clerk in Burgheim, a city on the opposite bank of the Rhine, and published his representative works, Jokes on the Train (1555), The Neighbor's Tale (1556), and The Golden Thread (1557). His simple prose, which is both educational and entertaining, and his sense of community that values ability and sincerity over birth status, make him the father of modern German civic novels.

ドイツの小説家。アルザス地方のコルマールに，有力者の私生児として生まれ育った。当地に職匠歌Meistersangを興し受難劇を書くなど徐々に地歩を占めたが，1555年ライン川の対岸ブルクハイム市の書記官となり，代表作《車中笑話集》(1555)，《隣人物語》(1556)，《金の糸》(1557)を公刊。教育性と娯楽性を加味した平易な散文，出生身分より能力と誠意を重んじる共同体意識などから，近代ドイツ市民小説の祖とみなされる。
