1505?‐62? German novelist. Born and raised in Colmar in the Alsace region as the illegitimate son of an influential man, he gradually established himself in Colmar by establishing the Meistersang artisan song movement and writing passion plays. In 1555, he became a clerk in Burgheim, a city on the opposite bank of the Rhine, and published his representative works, Jokes on the Train (1555), The Neighbor's Tale (1556), and The Golden Thread (1557). His simple prose, which is both educational and entertaining, and his sense of community that values ability and sincerity over birth status, make him the father of modern German civic novels.
