Year of death: October 24, 1876 (9th year of the Meiji era) Year of birth: Tempo 7.1.13 (1836.2.29) A sonno joi patriot during the Meiji Restoration period, and a leader of the Shinpuren (Keishinto) Rebellion. His real name was Tateyuki. He was the eldest son of Kaya Kumasuke, a samurai of the Higo Domain (Kumamoto Prefecture). When he was 16, his father committed suicide and his family name became extinct. He worked hard to study and learned the national scriptures at the Hara Dokan in Hayashi Oen. In 1860, his family name was allowed to be restored, and he played an active role as a central figure in the sonno joi faction within the domain. In 1862, he accompanied Hosokawa Morimi to Tokyo. The following year, he became a recorder at Gakushuin. He was forced to return to his domain in the August 18th Coup and was imprisoned until 1867. After the Meiji Restoration, he was sent to Nagasaki and Kyoto as a domain diplomatic student, but in 1871, he was implicated in the Dairaku (Gentaro) Incident, an anti-government activity, and was imprisoned again. In the same year, he became a priest at the prefectural shrine Kinzan Shrine, but resigned in anger at the sword ban issued in the following year. In October of the same year, he led the Shinpū-ren with Otaguro Tomoo and others in an attack on the Kumamoto Garrison barracks, but was killed in a counterattack. 没年:明治9.10.24(1876) 生年:天保7.1.13(1836.2.29) 幕末維新期の尊攘派志士,神風連(敬神党)の乱の指導者。名は楯行。肥後藩(熊本県)藩士加屋熊助の長男。16歳のとき,父が自殺し家名断絶。苦学して林桜園の原道館で国典を学ぶ。万延1(1860)年家名再興を許され,以後,藩内尊攘派の中心として活躍。文久2(1862)年細川護美に従って上京。翌年学習院録事。8月18日の政変で帰藩させられ,慶応3(1867)年まで入牢。維新後,藩外交生として長崎,京都に派遣されたが,明治4(1871)年,反政府活動を展開した大楽(源太郎)騒動に連座し再び投獄。同7年,県社錦山神社祠官となるが,同9年公布の廃刀令に憤り辞職。同年10月太田黒伴雄らと神風連一統を率いて熊本鎮台兵営を襲撃,反撃され戦死した。 (三澤純) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
