1758‐1807 Ayan (notable man) of Vidin, Bulgaria, in the Ottoman Empire. His ancestor was Pazwand-Ağa, a former Janissary officer in the early 18th century. He gradually gained power and opposed Selim III's Nizami Dedid (New Order). In 1795, he attacked and occupied Haji Mustafa Pasha in Belgrade, and in 1797, he was attacked by the Ottoman army as a rebel, but defeated them and took control of Bulgaria, Serbia, and Wallachia. He maintained a semi-independent state because Napoleon's invasion of Egypt directed Ottoman forces toward Syria. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
