As more and more so-called elementary particles are discovered, it becomes more realistic to think of them as being made up of several more fundamental particles (i.e., as having an internal structure) rather than the traditional idea that they are the smallest particles that cannot be divided any further. Models that are used to understand the composition and structure of elementary particles from this perspective are called elementary particle models. As many elementary particles were discovered from the end of the 1950s to the mid-1970s, various models emerged. The content of these models is extremely diverse, with some being mechanical models and others being models for classification based on symmetry.

いわゆる素粒子といわれているものが多数発見されてくると，従来のそれ以上分割できない最小の粒子という考えよりも，これらがいくつかのより基本的な粒子から構成されている(すなわち内部構造をもつ)と考えるほうが現実的である。このような立場に立って素粒子の構成や構造を理解するためのモデルを素粒子模型という。1950年代の終りから70年代半ばにかけて多数の素粒子が発見されたのに伴い，各種の模型が登場した。その内容はきわめて多種多様で，あるものは力学的な模型であり，またあるものは対称性に基づく分類のための模型であった。
