A village in Seta County, eastern Gunma Prefecture. Population 2,860 (1995). It occupies the eastern slope of Mount Akagi, and the Watarase River flows through the southeastern end of the village. The Watarase Valley Railway Line runs through the village. Most of the village area is covered by forest, and in addition to forestry, sericulture has been carried out here since ancient times. The main agricultural industry is livestock farming, including pig farming, and mushroom production is also thriving. It is within the commercial district of Kiryu, and many people commute to Kiryu and Omame, but the population continues to decline. It has been designated a depopulated area. 群馬県東部,勢多郡の村。人口2860(1995)。赤城山の東斜面を占め,南東端を渡良瀬川が流れる。わたらせ渓谷鉄道線が通じる。村域の大半は山林で,林業のほか,古くから養蚕が行われていた。農業の中心は養豚など畜産で,キノコの生産もさかん。桐生の商圏に属し,桐生,大間々への通勤者も多いが,人口減少が続いている。過疎地域に指定されている。【千葉 立也】
