...The other is the Bāmatī sect, based on the Bāmatī commentary on Shankara's Brahma-sūtra written by Bhāchaspatimishra around the 10th century. According to legend, Shankara founded four monasteries (maṭha) during his lifetime, and Shankara's ideological traditions are still passed down today, centering on these monasteries. These worshippers of Shankara are called Smārta, and form a sect of Hinduism called the Smārta sect. The Sringeri monastery in particular is the main temple and is influential in southern India, especially in the state of Karnataka.
