〘noun〙① A unit of length in the shaku-kan system. One-tenth of a shaku. Ten times one-tenth. In the kanejaku (carved ruler) system based on the compromise ruler system used since 1875 ( Meiji 8 ), one sun is about 3.03 centimeters. In the kujira shaku system, it is about 3.79 centimeters. ※Ryo Gikai (718) Miscellaneous "Ordinary. Ten minutes for an inch . Ten minutes for a shaku . Ten minutes for a length. " ※Genji (around 1001-14), Wakana no Ue "The hem of your comb was beautifully done, <omitted> and there was about seven or eight suns left over." [Dai-dai-rei - main statement] ② Length. One sun is equivalent to one momme (or 100 mon). *Ukiyo Zoushi, Gozen Gikeiki (1700), 1: "A rank of one can be called one sun or a moon, and two can be called two sun or a shadow." ⑥ A word used to count numbers in turnip gambling. Some numbers are not given, and it differs depending on the region. *Ukiyo Zoushi, Gozen Gikeiki (1700), 8: "Shirosaburo was told that he had no money to pay, and Saburozaemon was told that he had seven sun."

〘Suffix〙① An ancient unit of length. Equivalent to the modern sun (= about three centimeters). ※Kojiki (712), Vol. 2 "The length of the teeth was one sun (hitoki) , and its width was two bu (futakida) ." ② A word used in the past to measure the height of a horse. A horse was called umatake (horse length) with four shaku as the standard, and if it was longer than that, it was called one sun ( hitoki ) , two sun (futaki) , seven sun (nanaki) , eight sun (yaki) , etc. Anything over nine sun (one theory says eight sun) is said to be "excessive in height ." Three shaku and nine sun is called "kaeri issun." One theory says that it was limited to between four and seven sun. ※Utsubo (around 970-999), Fukiage no Kami "One horse whose height was eighty meters."

き【寸】

〘接尾〙① 古代での長さの単位の一つ。近年の寸(すん)(=約三センチメートル)に相当する。※古事記(712)下「御歯の長さ一寸(ひとき)、広さ二分(ふたきだ)」② 昔、馬の丈(たけ)を測るのに用いた語。馬は、四尺を標準として馬長(うまたけ)といい、それ以上の場合、一寸(ひとき)、二寸(ふたき)、七寸(ななき)、八寸(やき)などといった。九寸(一説に八寸)以上を、「丈(たけ)に余る」という。三尺九寸は「かえり一寸」という。一説に四寸から七寸までに限っていったという。※宇津保(970‐999頃)吹上上「むまのたけ八きばかりなる一つ」
