A roof made of thatch. Also, the act of thatching a roof. Thatch is a general term for plants such as Japanese pampas grass (Susuki) and Chigaya (Chigaya) from the Gramineae family, and Suge (Sedge) from the Cyperaceae family. It can be seen in pit dwellings from the Jomon period, and has long been used in houses west of the Tohoku region. As it requires a large amount of thatch and manpower, its use has decreased in recent years, and some buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
