Gaspé - Philippe Aubert de Gaspé

Canadian novelist. Of French descent. Lord of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli in southern Quebec. In the mid-18th century, he depicted the struggle between the British and French powers over the possession of French Canada and its final resolution in his historical novel, "Once Upon a Time in Canada" (1863), which is in the style of Scott's Waverley novels and combines romance with research into the customs of the time. He is the first important writer of French Canadian literature.

カナダの小説家。フランス系。ケベック州南部のサン・ジャン・ポール・ジョリの領主。18世紀なかばに、フランス系カナダの領有をめぐって展開される英仏両勢力の争いと、その最終的な決着とを、スコットのウェーバリー小説風の、恋愛と時代習俗の考証とを織り交ぜた歴史小説『往時のカナダ人』（1863）に描き出した。フランス系カナダ文学の最初の重要な作家である。
