Canadian novelist. Of French descent. Lord of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli in southern Quebec. In the mid-18th century, he depicted the struggle between the British and French powers over the possession of French Canada and its final resolution in his historical novel, "Once Upon a Time in Canada" (1863), which is in the style of Scott's Waverley novels and combines romance with research into the customs of the time.
