Mayor of the palace of the Frankish Kingdom. Illegitimate son of Pepin II of Herstal. Charles in France, Charles in England. After the death of his father (714), he neutralized the Merovingian kings by pitting them against each other, and took control of Austrasia. He also virtually unified Neustria and Burgundy, and held all the mayorship of the palace. In addition to campaigns in Saxony, Friesen, Thuringia, Bavaria, etc., he defeated the Muslim army advancing north at Poitiers in 732 (Battle of Tours and Poitiers), which made him famous in Western Christian Europe, and he used this momentum to expand into Aquitaine and Provence (campaigns in 737 and 739).
