Cuthbertson family

...Since it was described by an Italian missionary in 1695, it has been improved in Europe, especially in England, and the large-flowered summer-flowering Spencer variety was developed. Later, in 1906, the winter-flowering Spencer variety was developed in America and became a greenhouse cultivar, but in 1948, Cuthbertson FG Cusbertson developed a spring-flowering variety by crossbreeding the summer-flowering variety with the winter-flowering variety, which became known as the Cuthbertson variety and became widely cultivated for both outdoor and greenhouse use and as cut flowers. Further improvements have been made to the dwarf large-flowered and small-flowered varieties, and varieties suitable for pots and planters have been developed. ...

…1695年イタリアの宣教師に記載されて以来，ヨーロッパとくにイギリスで改良が進み，大輪の夏咲きスペンサー系が作出された。その後アメリカで1906年に冬咲きスペンサーが作出されて温室栽培種となったが，1948年アメリカでカスバートソンF.G.Cusbertsonが夏咲系と冬咲系の交配により春咲種を作出し，これはカスバートソン系と称され，露地温室兼用，切花用種とひろく栽培されるようになった。さらに改良されたものには，矮性（わいせい）大輪種や小輪種があり，鉢作りやプランターにも適するものが作出されている。…
