A village in Kawanuma County, northwest of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 3,642 (1995). Located in the center of the Aizu Basin, near the confluence of the Aga River (Okawa) and Nitsubashi River, the flat land is about 180m above sea level and is one of the largest rice paddy areas in the prefecture. In recent years, the number of employed people has decreased significantly, but management has been diversifying. The central settlement is Oikawa along the old Yonezawa Kaido. The JR Ban'etsu West Line runs through the village, connecting it to Aizu-Wakamatsu City to the south. Shojoji Temple in Shojo in the west is said to have been founded by Tokuichi in the early Heian period. It is one of the five Aizu Yakushi temples, and is also called "Aizu Central Yakushi" as it is located almost in the center of the Aizu Basin.
